Certified self-contained vehicles

If you are driving a certified self-contained vehicle, please dispose of your grey water (sink and shower) and toilet waste in a safe and environmentally sound way at an approved dump station. Campervan companies recommend disposing of your waste every 2-3 days.

Your vehicle is not certified self-contained if it does not meet the Self containment of motor caravans and caravans standard. 

How to find a dump station

Most camping grounds will have dump stations and there are also public ones throughout the country.

Find public dump stations:

The New Zealand Motor Caravan Association (NZMCA) website has a map with public dump station locations nationwide  – simply enter the area or region you’re planning to camp in and using the filter tool to the right of the map, select Public Dump Station from the filter option to view public dump stations within  20, 60 or 100km – look out for the blue dump station symbols on the map.

Keep an eye out for the blue Dump Station symbol as you travel throughout the country. Many public dump stations are located at service/petrol stations.

 

 

 

 

Use a toilet

If you don't have a self-contained vehicle, please don't use the bush, waterways or side of the road as a toilet! There are toilets at all designated camping grounds and public toilets throughout the country - most of these are located in the centre of villages, towns and cities.

There are also roadside 'rest areas' around the country where you can pull over for a rest. Some of these also have toilets.

  

No toilet? 

It is important to dispose of human waste properly in the outdoors when there are no toilets. Leaving human waste in natural areas can result in contaminated water supplies and soils, and lead to diseases such as Giardia.
